Mountain Hunger

You’ve heard the stories of pregnant women who crave a particular food to feed their growing babe within.  She chooses the food, perhaps, sushi, because it provides the nutrient or the satisfaction that she needs.

Your soul has needs, too.  At some time, because of the load you’re under, the transformation you’re making, you’ll experience soul hunger.  You will experience some kind of sensations that will call you somewhere, or drive you to feed your heart and soul in some way.

Don’t fall for your usual distractions; this hunger won’t be deflected.

Your hunger for the mountains, perhaps, will be what your soul calls for because it knows the mountains have fed this particular deficiency before.  Perhaps, something else will work, perhaps, your soul really needs the mountains and nothing else contains the right nourishment for your heart.

I have hungered for THE mountain all summer.  The unusually late and heavy snows have prevented me from going until late in the season.  (Around here THE mountain is Tahoma, named by Capt. Vancouver as Mt. Rainier.)

I’ve been up to Tahoma five times in the last few weeks.  I made a pilgrimage to the mountain a few days ago.  It snowed.  It rained.  It had fog and clouds drifting across my trail.  It was deeply still.  It was heaven.

I still need some more time.  I may never know what’s driving this extra need.  Currently, I’d vote for it being a growth spurt of some sort.

I go again this Saturday with both my daughters and maybe Suzanne will join us.

Perhaps, I’m just deficient in wilderness.  I believe most moderns are quite deficient in wilderness.

Do you know what I’m talking about?  Where does your soul call you?

What Soul Hunger do you need to feed?

Listen, your body will tell you.

If you find you need to go to the desert, go.  The ocean, go.  The cathedral, go.  The labyrinth, go.  The temple, go.

Listen.

Your heart will tell you.

Repeat as needed.

Walk in beauty,

William
