Spiritual Practice & Carnegie Hall

Posted On Jul 8 2011 by

You know this one: A visitor to New York City asks a local guy, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”

The local says, “Practice. Practice. Practice!”

Today, I ask you, “How do you get to live a life you love?”

Same answer, “Practice!”

I have a practice of practicing those things that keep me living a life I love.  Over the year I have tried many things.  In a moment, I’ll share one with you, but first a ground rule.

There is no living happily ever after without continual practices.

Happiness is about circumstances, about chance.  Living a life you love is beyond circumstance.  If you need sunny skies to be happy, you’re subject to the ever changing whims of circumstances.  Living a life you love is about loving it all even in the inevitable rain or snow.

All spiritual traditions have suggestions for you on how to live a life you love.  Some have rules.  Rules aren’t practices; at least not how I think about practices.  We do rules because someone else said so.  You do practices because they work for you.  You have tested them in the crucible of your daily life.

Our Magicality Program Podcasts

As you know, Krysta Gibson and I took on a project to create a series of podcasts that would speak to the listener as if the three of us were having an intimate conversation together – You, me and Krysta just talking about things that matter.

One of our podcasts was about spiritual or life practices.  We gave ourselves a challenge and limited the list to five each.  Both of us use way more than five to navigate this world, but we settled on five we thought would be super useful for you.

A Fantastic Favorite Practice

Here’s one of my current favorites.  Just sit in a comfortable position, either on a cushion, cross legged on the floor or in a chair.  Then just FEEL the sensations of your breath flowing into your body and flowing out again.  It’s like being caressed by a supremely loving being from the inside.

One simple consequence of this practice is you will be deeply in the present moment.

What good is that?

Well, you’ll be happy.  Your nattering mind will be quiet.  You’ll be calm.

For this moment, you’ll be enlightened, at one with everything and everyone.  You’ll be peaceful.

And what more would you like?

How’s this?  If you have a problem, it will likely be solved by the time you arise.  Or a path to the solution will be evident and you can move on your new direction.

Get all 10 of the practices, test them in your life, and live a life you love.
