Old Fogies

“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were.” – Satchel Page

Danny Westneat of the Seattle Times tells a wonderful story of some self proclaimed “old fogies” that might just change your world.

Back in the olden days, the 60s, I calculated the year I would retire — 2012.  You may recall that I majored in Engineering and Applied Physics at Harvard; so I like to calculate.

Because of this history, I have an admiration and appreciation for engineers of all stripes.  I want to tell you three stories about these retired Boeing engineers ranging in age from 74 to 92 years – the old fogies.

One – they may have created a way to harness the constant motion of the ocean waves and convert that super green energy into something you can use.

Two – They are old, retired but still smart as hell and capable.  I read recently about an active physicist in his 80s who has a brain nearly destroyed by Alzheimer’s disease, but who demonstrates no symptoms because he’s still working with his brain, actively working.

Take note: These guys are acting in the best ways to stay healthy.  Do likewise.

Three – they are making a contribution to the next generation.  Actually, they are thinking seven generations out.  They will not live to see the results of their work.  And they are working 30 hour work weeks without pay.

Today, I have 63.75 years.  Not quite an old fogy, but certainly a nascent elder.  I have decided to continue to work until people stop coming to see me and I have nothing more to say.

Why?  Because my skills keep getting better and I am getting wiser.

Engaging with people in meaningful ways demands that I be fully present.  And that’s good for me and for them.  Obviously, I am of an age where I can’t predict anything about the future, but given that uncertainty, this is my aim.

How can you continue to contribute as you gain years?

Walk in beauty,

William

P.S. Who else wants to have work they love to do? And have FUN?

Life coaching can help you get there.  I offer a Six-Pack Of Sessions.  You buy five half hour sessions and the sixth one’s free.  Cool, right!
