I startled myself while I was improvising on my new digital piano. I liked the music immensely, I was happy, but who was playing the piano, nobody I knew. I improvise without thought, spontaneous reflections of who I am in the moment. But who is that?
I have written three books on making art, maybe four, if you count Altar Making, which I do. (See Find Oneness Making Art on my website for the list.) Making art, no matter how unskilled, brings you into the present moment and frees you from your ever chattering mind, your anger, your fears. Frees you from all of it.
Poetry also works the same way. Maybe all writing.
That present moment activity frees and heals your heart and soul from any and all of the pandemic or cultural angst. At least it can help. I find it takes large amount of self care to stay even with my current stressors.
Play music, do art.
Self Portraits
I am clear that every piece of art I create reveals who I am in that moment. Like self portraits, they reveal my unseen heart and soul.
All poetry and writing can be read as autobiography.
My piano playing startled me. And recently, meaning just after the election results, two clients sent me images of their art work. Wow.
This one at right comes from a beloved friend.
Who had they become and when? They had changed their lives due to the pandemic. We all have much more time for introspection and being outdoors even when we seem to have no time at all.
Make something, music or art, or notice who’s singing in your shower and notice if the songs have changed. You have an opportunity with the pandemic for deep self reflection.
Whereas the typical selfie insipidly fails, these self portraits can profoundly reveal your soul.
May you walk in beauty,
William
