Your Sketch Is Precious
Let me tell you a story. You may know that my dad was a premier art museum director. I grew up in a home with masterpieces everywhere, and the museum, which was Dad’s second home, displayed some of the world’s best art.
My mom sketched. She did it for love and never thought much of her skills. Dad framed a small piece of hers. Just one.
As they aged, they moved to smaller homes, selling off art on the way. Mom’s sketch made with colored markers remained even into the last and smallest apartment Dad lived in after Mom completed her life. The flower pot sketch of Mom’s remained and not many other pieces.
Is the sketch good? Not really. Is it loveable – “Hell yes” I hear my daughter say. Why?
Here’s my take today. It reveals the soul of a mature woman who lived an interesting life. A woman who loved her husband deeply. It’s a self portrait of her soul. What’s not to love?
Mom’s Flowers was one of the few pieces of art that we inherited that my brother, John, Suzanne, and all the grandchildren wanted.
I’m considering lending it to John for 10 years. He’s to return it to me. I’m not sure Suzanne will go along with the idea.
You see, every sketch you make is a self portrait of your precious soul. Make some sketches. Give them to people you love.
