An Easy Way to a Peaceful Restful Sleep
She was more than ready for sleep even before she listened to Doom and Gloom, the two guys who were always talking outside the Rusty Tern, the tavern down below where she rented a room. Listlessly she brushed her teeth, checked to see Toad and Princess, her two felines, had food and water, then flopped into bed exhausted. Again.
Sleep refused to come, of course. Her mind raced, replaying all the things she should have done right at the market this day. She should have told that nobleman about how good her pieces would look in the family chapel… And there was this and there was that she should have done… “Go to sleep,” Jean, she told herself.
The endless mind chatter continued to harass her. As she listed and repeated all the chores she should do the next day, sleep evaded her. On and on… then she remembered what the always cheerful, wise and mellow, Marge, in the booth next to her’s said about sleep. Jean had dismissed it as useless and too simple, but what the heck, she’d give it a try. She knew she had nothing to lose tossing and turning had never worked.
Marge had told her, “You’ll find this to be an easy way to a peaceful restful sleep. Start out by resting on your back honey. Then do this breathing. It will energize you so you can have enough energy to rest. It works well all the time, but especially when you’re too wound up to get restful sleep.”
“Inhale as deeply as you can counting to four,” Marge continued. “Hold for a count of sixteen, then let it go for a count of eight. Repeat that ten times and you’ll be ready for sleep.
“If you can’t hold it for sixteen, just hold it for eight counts at first, or twelve. I like twelve most of the time… It feels easy. You want this to all feel easy and restful after all. Right?”
“How’s this help?” Jean asked.
“All the fretting and mind chatter just goes away when you give the mind a chance to pay attention to counting and to watching your breathing. It cannot fret and pay attention to the other things at the same time… Naturally, you fall into the blessed, peaceful state of wordlessness.”
“Oh, and breathing in this way balances your oxygen and carbon dioxide stuff. The yogis have been doing it for thousands of years. So you know it works.” Marge finished.
Jean tried it. Went to sleep. Slept well all night. As the sun peeped through her curtains and her beloved monster cats snuggled on top of her, Jean stirred. Jean recalled the other pat of what Marge had said.
Marge told her to do the same breathing when she woke up to smooth the transition from sleep to waking.
“Honey, don’t just jump out of bed,” Marge had said, “Do the breathing again. Just the same way. This will help you welcome your day instead dreading it and feeling like your catching up all day. Take a few minutes. Ease into your day. Trust me.” And Jean did.
…The End…
